CANCER CURE –ROLE OF AYURVEDA AND SANTULAN PANCHAKARMA TREATMENTS

Cancer is an unpredictable space element oriented disease which affects the basic vital life force i.e. Prana and Ojas. Cancer is an abnormal growth caused by change in the cell program due to imbalance of the tridoshas. It is an individual oriented disease i.e. it acts differently in each patient, hence the treatment needs to be planned according to individual constitution. With all the experience, one can say that Holistic approach plays a vital role in cancer management and treatment. Ayurvedic therapies, medications need to be inclusive of Yoga, Healing Music and Meditation. Cancer is a change in cell program at the causal level and disturbance in the Agni at the physical level. It is important to work upon this program as it is the key to the solution for cancer. Agni, here can be correlated as the entire hormonal functioning in the body which are responsible for directly bringing the messages from the brain and translate it onto the different body organs.

Though there is no direct mention of the word Cancer in the traditional Ayurvedic manuscripts, Acharya Charak has clearly indicated that it is not necessary to coin the name of the disease always, it is possible to treat any disease based on the disturbance of doshas and dhatus. Modern time diseases like Cancer and AIDS can hence be treated on this basis as Ayurveda describes how to treat the particular disturbances. The individual constitution and patients psychology is also very important. Many times the name of the disease gives a greater shock to the patient than the troublesome symptoms.  Ayurveda purposefully does not give the name to such particular disease as these are program oriented disease.

Cancer is understood as an ‘Abnormal Growth’, the growth can be external or internal and can exist in any body tissue viz. Rasa, Rakta, Maunsa, Meda, Asthi and Majja. There is excess production of new cells while the dead cells in body tissue are not replaced and managed adequately. Deposit of the unmanaged or abnormal cells leads to the growth of tumor which may be Benign or Malignant.

Cancer is a basic metabolic disturbance, an imbalance of the five elements, Panchamahabhutas. It is mainly a space element (Vata Dosha) oriented disease. The disease and its secondary growths affect other distinct areas of the body, not necessarily extending to the neighboring areas, so one can say that it actually jumps to different parts of the body using space as medium. Cancer can affect any person, of any age group and any body organ.

Main cause for cancer is ‘Chittavrutti’ i.e. disturbance in the conditioning of the mind. The mind belongs to the space element and its disturbance leads to psychological and emotional disharmony leading to imbalance of life activities.

The Ayurvedic physician should judge the following in Cancer treatment:

The status of the Dosha /Dooshya,

The etiology of Pathogenesis (Vikaara Pravritti),

Origin of Ailment (Adhisthana)

Site of Evolution of (Samutthana)

Considering the above mentioned factors one should treat the patient accordingly. Nomenclature to every syndrome may not be mentioned. These guidelines work like a candle in the dark for the physicians to treat contemporary disorders.

Looking at the terms defined earlier and the guidelines of Ayurveda cancer can be understood as:

Internal Gulma

External Arbud
